Open Baffle (OB), or Open Back speakers (basically a shallow box without a back), have been part of the audio reproduction scene from the very beginning. The original "best available" sound reproduction technology. In fact, the Open Baffle format was the first dynamic speaker design able to provide practical play back of recorded music as well as live vocal reinforcement. However, the OB speaker format, (like all speaker formats that have followed it), has its virtues and weaknesses.
Prior to about 1950, the majority of home sound reproduction systems utilized various configurations of the OB format. These included various radios (table, clock and large floor standing), state of the art phonographs and organs. Many from the best manufactures of the time.
Unfortunately, the OB format fell out of favor as speaker system "size reduction" became a market place priority.
However, advancements in driver and crossover technologies plus the current availability of affordable high quality, medium power amplifiers have propelled the simple Open Baffle back to a "best available technology"! As is often the case, with the test of time, simple often turns out to be better.
OB's, like their box format cousins, can utilize a single Full Range driver, or, a combination of two, three or more drivers with passive or active crossover treatments. Benefiting from our 50 years of speaker design experience, we have found properly designed passive two way (woofer-tweeter) format(s) offer the best overall performance and cost efficiency for most listeners in a residential setting. For those who require extreme output capabilities, a three way configuration is available.

The original Manzanita is a simple two way, OB design that combines a five element passive crossover with excellent drivers from Peerless and Vifa. The original Manzanita has become well regarded in the DYI community for delivering a unique combination of cost effective simplicity with a surprising open and musical presentation! Great where space is tight or in any small to medium sized residential setting.
Tuneful, with powerful, low distortion bass response, the original Manzanita offers the listener near full range performance from a practical sized system. The original Manzanita delivers bass quality and extension not found in commercial OB designs anywhere close to its size! The Manzanita Ultra Plus and Widow Maker II floor standing designs are WONDERFUL companions for higher powered Single Ended Tube amplifiers and other low to medium power amplifiers (15 watts RMS and up to 120 watts RMS per channel). Open, dynamic and musical OB reproduction is available from the 89 db/watt Ultra Plus! or 94 db/watt Widow Maker II.
Both of these larger floor standing designs offer usable bass response into the mid twenties! The Manzanita CV and Manzanita Ultra are true "bang for the buck" over achievers with operating efficiencies of 84 & 85 db/watt. The Manzanita Ultra being a larger width floor standing design version of the Manzanita CV also reaches all the way down into the mid twenties with an overall sweet, natural and forgiving quality.
